The DR, the largest recipient of foreign investiment in the Caribbean
03/23/11.- According to statistics published by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribeean, the Dominican Republic was the country with the largest share of foreign investment in the entire Caribbean area during 2009 and the first quarter of 2010. Total investment reached US$2.158 billion, or 37% of foreign investment inthe area. In spite of all the country's shortcomings, foreign investment throughout the last five years has climbed to the record figure of US$11 billion, leaving positive projections for growth in 2011.
Signal capital investments that the Dominican Republic has attracted in recent years are the US$462 million in Chinese financing for the Punta Perla Project in Punta Cana, the Gems at Cap Cana project, American AMResorts’ four new luxury resorts in Cap Cana, with an initial investment of US$400 million, and the arrival of Swedish retailing giant IKEA to the Dominican capital.
